Le manuscrit a vraisemblablement été réalisé pour le cardinal Jean d'Aragon ; il a fait partie de la bibliothèque des rois Aragonais de Naples et fut vendu à Georges Ier d'Amboise (avant 1504), cf. l'inventaire de 1508 : "Josephus de bello Judaico couvert de velours rouge garni d'un fermaut d'argent doré. ". On le trouve inscrit dans l'inventaire du château de Gaillon après le décès en 1550 de Georges II d'Amboise: "Autre [Josephus] couvert de velours rouge pelé". Le manuscrit disparaît après 1550. Il est présent par la suite dans la bibliothèque de la Sorbonne (cf. estampille), avant d'intégrer les collections de la Bibliothèque nationale lors des saisies révolutionnaires.
