• Manuscript 517 is a reference work on the writings of Aristotle. The volume contains both word indices (Tabulae) and chapter lists (Capitula or Distinctiones), with the former referring to the location in the Corpus Aristotelicum through a series of letters and numbers. The codex begins (ff. 1r-124r) with an index on the natural writings and the Metaphysica; followed (ff. 124v-139v) by an index on the De animalibus; and by two indices on the Logica vetus (ff. 139v-144v) and Logica nova (ff. 144v-160v). The following unit (ff. 161r-174r) gives the chapter headings for a large number of treatises, i.e. the Physica, De Generatione, Meteorologica, De caelo et mundo, De anima, De memoria et reminiscentia, De sompno et vigilia, De morte et vita, De vegetabilibus, Metaphysica, De animalibus, Predicamenta, Perihermeneias, De sex principiorum, Topica, Elencha, and the Analytica Priora and Posteriora. This is followed (ff. 175v-205v) by an index on the Ethica, followed (ff. 205v-206v) by a list of chapter headings for this work. The last unit (ff. 207r-229r) is an index on the Ethica, Politica and Rethorica. Two scribes have worked on this volume: one on the first five reference tools, the other on the last three. The former has ended three units with a colophon, identifying him as Laurencius Ducis or Laurencius Hertoghen, a monk from Ter Doest, who copied these units for his abbey. One of them also mentions the year, 1372. The other units written by this scribe must have been produced The scribes used a similar layout and decoration to harmonize their work. The text is copied in two columns (with the exception of ff. 168r-174r, which contain three columns per page), surrounded by broad margins for lemmata and references to titles. Initials, paragraph marks and decorative strokes through majuscules have been executed in red ink. The scribe Hertoghen used majuscules for incipits and explicits. The first initial of each unit has been carefully executed with decorative penwork. The binding is medieval and consists of blind stamped full leather over wooden boards. The fenestra has survived and is attached to the back board. Traces of clamps are visible. The codex was originally owned by the Ter Doest abbey, as mentioned in one of the colophons, and found its way into the collection of Ten Duinen.
