Ce manuscrit est un recueil factice constitué à Saint-Martial de Limoges (cf. cotes ancienne au f. 2r : « CXLIII », biffée, et « Vol. 170 » et l’ex-libris au f. Ev : « Liber sum Sancti Marcialis. Si quis me furaverit maledictus sit in perpetuum. Amen »). Les différentes unités ont été copiées par différents mains à des époques diverses : les f. 119-125 sont très probablement de la main d’Adémar de Chabannes (†1034), moine de Saint-Martial. Les f. 126-133, selon B. Bischoff, proviennent de l’Italie du Nord (cf. B. Bischoff, Mittelalterliche Studies, 1, 1966, p. 95).Sur le recto du f. 2 est collé un billet en papier portant la mention du contenu (XVIIIe siècle). Au f. Br, mention du contenu (XVIIIe siècle). Au f. Av, note concernant le contenu, suivie du récolement du 27 août 1890.
