La constitution du "groupe romain" parmi les manuscrits de François Ier remonte au cardinal florentin Giovanni Gaddi, doyen de la chambre apostolique, bibliophile ; avant sa mort en 1542, il dut promettre de faire un don de manuscrits au roi de France puisqu'il apparaît dans la liste des bienfaiteurs rédigée par Ange Vergère en 1545 au moment du premier inventaire de la bibliothèque royale de Fontainebleau ; c'est son petit-fils Nicolas Gaddi, lui aussi cardinal, qui se charge d'exécuter le don, non sans avoir fait relier les quinze manuscrits en question dans l'atelier romain de Maître Luigi. Ces manuscrits arrivent à Fontainebleau entre les inventaires de 1545 et de 1549-1551, où le Paris. gr. 1841 est décrit comme relié δέρματι μελανοπορφυρῷ.
