  • Collection. Documents in Spanish concerning leases of houses and lands bequeathed to Hospitals in or near Burgos. (1) Two copies, one written above the other, of a Deed of Gift of lands near Varuela to the Burgos Hospital. (1 leaf, small semi-cursive gothic char., 23 and 24 lines. 52½ x 24 cm. Dated 11 June 1308. Written by Ferrando Abat 'escrivano del Consejo de Otardoros'. [?] (2) Censo perpetuo que se dio Alfonso Martines que fue de Burgos de unas casas a Cantarranas la menor por 30 maravedis y por servicios que auia [f]echo al Hospital se las dexaron en 15 maravedis, (1 leaf. semi-cursive rounded gothic char. 60 lines to a page. 61 x 43½ cm.). Dated 27 May 1408, 21 March 1410. Written by Johan Gonzales 'escrivano publico' of Burgos, with his paraph. (3) Maria Fernandez viuda de Johan Martines pintor como heredera y cabrealera para cumplir su testamento vende asi para Juan Bernalde frey del Ospital del Rey una tierra de cabe una carga de sembradera en termino de Villa-villa con cinquenta y dos salces alderridor della por 19250 maravedis (1 leaf. semi-cursive gothic char. 59 lines to a page. 47 x 31 cm.). Dated 25 April 1432. The last 8 lines are by the hand of Gomez Fernandes de Castro 'escrivano publico' of Burgos, with his paraph, who gives a 'Testimonio de Verdad' to the document drawn up by Antonio Lopes Sanchez, also an 'escrivano publico'. (4) Carta de Censo que se dio a Alfonso Yaniz serondo de dos pedaços de viña al Arroyo de Mataperros por un florin de oro (1 leaf. semi-cursive gothic char. 73 lines to a page. 55½ x 32½ cm.). Dated 5 February 1435. The last 4 lines are by the hand of Diego Garcia of Salamanca, 'escribano publico', with his paraph, who gives his 'Testimonio de Verdad' to the document originally drawn up by Antonio Lopes Sanchez [Cf. supra]. (5) Hospital del Rey. Carta de Censo para los señores commendador y freyres del ospital del Rey de un solar en la cuesta de los ciegos que dieron el Rey lo presente clerigo por precio de seseinta maravedis en cada un año perpetuamente para siemprejamas (4 ll. gothic char. 42 lines to a page. folio. 29 x 20½ cm.). Dated 11 April 1475. After the main text on the last leaf is a holograph 'Testimonio de Verdad', written and signed with his paraph by Francisco Sanchez de Tarancon, Scrivener and Public Notary to the City of Burgos. (6) Hospital del Rey. Incomplete document, the beginning and end of which are wanting, containing a 'Carta de Comision' to expel and restrain certain persons who had illegally occupied and damaged lands and properties belonging to the Hospital del Rey (6 ll., gothic char. 39 lines to a page. folio. 27 x 19½ cm.). Dated 18 June 1488 on lines 22, 23 of the recto of the second leaf. The script is somewhat difficult, being a semi-cursive gothic with many contractions. (7) Incomplete document. Carta de Censo de Francisco de Lerma vicino de Burgos sobre Tristan de Sahagun y Constancia del Castillo su muger que se vendieron sobre tres pares de casas y un corral al a puerta vieja de Varrio de San Pedro (4 ll. rounded gothic char. 32 lines to a page. folio. 30½ x 22 cm.). No date is given in the text, but 1494 is written on the verso of the lower cover. A leaf or leaves wanting after the third leaf. The last leaf (recto) contains a 'testimonio de Verdad' signe by Fernando Dianes [Cf. No. 8] with his paraph. A separate Declaration on behalf of Constancia del Castillo is similarly signed and attested. No mention of a Hospital in or near Burgos appears in the text as it now stands, but this document was found with the other nine items in this collection. (8) Hospital del Rey. Carta de Censo para los señores commendador y freyres del ospital del Rey tiene y le pertenece en el lugar de humada y en sus terminos que es en la merindad de Villadiego cierta heredad de panlevar la qual ellos quieren dar a censo perpetuo para siemprejamas al consejo y hombres buenos del dicho lugar de humada ('provecheros' superscribed) por quanto era mas util y provechoso al dicho ospital. (6 ll., gothic char. 36 lines to a page. folio. 30 x 21 cm.) Dated 25 November 1496. After the main text on the last leaf is a holograph 'Testimonio de Verdad', written and signed with his paraph by Fernan Dianes, Scrivener and Public Notary of Burgos. (9) Hospital del Rey. Carta executoria en el pleito entre los arrendadores de la carne de la ciudad de Burgos y Pedro de Villaverde vezino del Hospital del Rey (4 ll. rounded gothic char. 40 lines to a page. folio. 31½ x 21 cm.). Dated 13 February 1512. The title on the cover is: 'Executoria sobre al esencion del tributos en las carnes limpiadas [?] con los arrendadores de ellas en Burgos en el año 1512'. Signed by [?], Licenciado Muxica, Doctor Carvajal, Licenciado de Sosa, Doctor Cabrero, Licenciado Pedro Ymenes [Jimenes]. Endorsed by Christoval de Vitoria consejero de la Camera de la Reyna, and signed by J. Castañeda Ochana, Notary. The first name has not been deciphered. In some transcriptions of the names written by a 17th cent. owner inside the lower cover, it is given as 'Liztus Marquez husin', which does not seem to be possible, and no such name appears in the Text. A suggested interpretation is 'iohannes R[odri]g[ues] de onya': a 'Iohan Rodrigues de oña' is mentioned on leaf 3v, line 7 as one of the 'Arrendadores'. (10) Hospital del Rey. Censo para el ospital del rrey de las Casas y corral de ayllon que dieron a censo andres martines clerigo de Aillon por un ducado. (16 ll. Spanish law hand 40 lines to a page. folio. 32½ x 21½ cm.). Dated 4 December 1532 With a holograph 'Testimonio de Verdad' by Sebastian Fernandes de Guezo, who describes himself at the end of the text as 'Escribano de Camara de sus Magestades y Señores et escribano publico del Infermero del ospital del ciudade de Burgos'. Produced in Burgos.
