  • The commentaries on Paul's letters contained in manuscript 85 were written by Peter Lombard (c. 1095 - c. 1160). The manuscript dates back to the thirteenth century (c. 1230 - 1240). It was in possession of Ten Duinen Abbey. By design, the text has a complicated layout. Peter Lombard created a page layout in which line height indicates different textual hierarchies. Red lines under the text link the commentary to the main text. The document is a typical product of Parisian scribes from commercial workshops. Nine historiated initials depict Paul barefoot on a gold leaf background with his attributes: a sword and/ or a book. On Folio 3r Paul is depicted as a writer. The manuscript is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type. [Summary by Sarah Vanroye]
