  • Manuscript 532, probably dating from the first quarter of the thirteenth century, is a collection of no less than thirteen different texts, classifiable in three main themes: music, Boethian theology and (mostly Ciceronian) philosophy. The first text is (f. 1r) the Horologium by Gerbert of Aurillac (946-1003), a French scholar who later ascended to the papal dignity as Sylvester II. Before that, he wrote treatises on multiple subjects, including time and its reckoning. The text is followed by two anonymous texts that form the first major theme: the (ff. 1r-4r) Designatio monochordi, and a short, unnamed treatise from the ninth century (ff. 3r-4r), known in other copies as Alia musica. The main body of the manuscript has been reserved for the works of Boethius. These are (ff. 4v-9v) De Trinitate; (ff. 9v-10r) a treatise named Utrum Pater et Filius et Spiritus sanctus de diuinitate substantialiter praedicentur; (ff. 10v-12r) De Hebdomadibus; (ff. 12r-15v) De fide catholica; (ff. 15v-24r) Liber de persona et de duabus naturis contra Eutychen et Nestorium; and finally (ff. 24r-53v) his magnum opus De consolatione philosophiae. With the exception of the latter, all of Boethius' texts in this volume are accompanied by glosses by John Scotus Eriugena (c. 810-c. 877) and possibly by Remigius Altissiodorensis (d. 908). The De consolatione forms a link with the final theme, as the remaining four texts all deal with philosophy. The first three were written by the Roman orator Cicero: (ff. 53v-62v) De senectute; (ff. 62v-66v) De paradoxa stoicorum; and (ff. 66v-75v) De amicitia. The final text (ff. 76v-80v) is the De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii by the fifth-century Roman Martianus Capella. In general, the text is written in a single column per page. The main exception is the unit with the Boethian texts: there the main text is written in a middle column, bordered by the glosses by Scotus and Remigius in the left and right column respectively. Parts of the De consolatione are written in two columns. Initials and reading assistants have been added in red and blue ink, and (somewhat later) rubrics are found throughout the codex. The manuscript is bound in post-medieval clean parchment, making it impossible to recognize any possible ownership marks of Ter Doest. The cross-shaped stamp of Ten Duinen is found on the first folium. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer]
